Jazz Pianist • Musician • Composer • Educator
Jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and teacher Dan Banks is based in Medway, Kent. He begun studying classical piano at an early age under the tutelage of Tim Carey but soon developed an interest in jazz and improvised music. He has studied jazz piano, theory, arranging, and composition with Eddie Harvey, Barry Green, Brian Everington, Pete Cook, and holds a Masters degree in performance (awarded with distinction) from London College of Music.
Dan's influences as a pianist are broad. His initial experience of music came from the likes of Paul Simon, The Beatles, and Ricky Lee Jones—all played a lot at home when he was a child. However when he formally started piano lessons these focussed entirely on the classical tradition. His formative experience of learning classical music has remained, and still now he plays Bach, Bartok, and Debussy on a regular basis. In terms of Dan's jazz influences these range from what you'd expect (Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock), to the more contemporary (Eldar Djangirov, Joey Alexander, Jason Rebello, Michel Camilo, Michel Petrucciani, Craig Taborn), via the non-pianists (Miles Davis, Chris Potter, Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, and many more).
As a jazz pianist Dan has performed at a vast array of jazz venues and festivals including: The Jazz Cafe, The Bulls Head, The Octave, The Belvedere, Dereham Jazz Club, The Bassment, Milestones Jazz Club, Harlow Jazz Club, The Soundhouse, Manchester Jazz Festival, The Isle of Wight International Jazz Festival, The London Jazz Festival and the Corsica Jazz & Blues Festival. Dan is house pianist at The Bassment Club were he has performed alongside British Jazz luminaries including: Laurence Cottle, Ian Thomas, Mark Nightingale, Paul Higgs, Nigel Price, Gareth Lockrane, Mark Armstrong, Roberto Manzin, Vasilis Xenopoulos, John Etheridge, and many more. As a sideman Dan has worked with The Zak Barrett Quartet, Tony Sandeman's 'Natural Selection', The Shez Raja Collective, Solar, The Simon Hurley Quartet, Alex Field's 'Nardis', Trevor Tyler's 'Aero', Paul Higgs' 'Shades of Miles', and The Graeme Culham Sextet and Quintet.
Dan is also heavily involved in education and is currently a part-time lecturer on the MMus (work based learning) course at London College of Music, and is Musical Director at Dartford Art Centre. Dan is also in demand as a clinician and has given masterclasses on jazz theory, jazz piano, and jazz pedagogy for institutes and organisations across the UK.
Dan recently featured on the debut album and EP of jazz fusion group Solar and has recorded his debut album—featuring Roberto Manzin (saxophone), Paul Higgs (trumpet), Jose Canha (double bass), and Josh Law (drums)—which was released in February 2017.
